Now Hiring: Restaurant Industry Adds Half Million Jobs

While the recovery is stalling in some industries, the restaurant industry is really cooking. Restaurants are expected to add 425,000 jobs this summer season, a 4.6 percent increase over the March 2011 employment level, according to the most recent National Restaurant Association projections.

This year shows the strongest summer employment projections since 2007, suggesting that the restaurant industry is heading into better economic times. America's restaurants are the nation's second-largest private-sector employer and job creator, with nearly 13 million employees, or almost 10 percent of the U.S. workforce. Let's face it -- everybody eats. No wonder the industry is doing so well.

And more than nine in 10 restaurants (93 percent) are small businesses with less than 50 employees, supporting the belief that it's the smaller businesses that are making the real differences when it comes to job creation.

"The restaurant industry has outperformed the overall economy when it comes to job creation for the past year, proving its role as a key driver to economic recovery and growth in America," said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the research and knowledge group for the association.

Who knew that the restaurant industry is usually the nation's second-largest creator of summer jobs -- second only to the construction industry? Eating and drinking establishments added 401,600 jobs (a 4.4 percent increase) during the 2010 summer season, 391,300 jobs (a 4.2 percent increase) during the 2009 summer season, and 352,900 jobs (a 3.7 percent increase) during the 2008 summer season.

The states projected to add the most eating- and drinking-place jobs during the 2011 summer season are New York (39,700), California (35,100), Massachusetts (27,100), New Jersey (23,200), Illinois (21,000), Michigan (20,200), Ohio (19,700) and Texas (18,600).

The states projected to register the largest proportional employment increase during the 2011 summer season are Maine (31.1 percent increase), Alaska (23.0 percent increase) and Delaware (20.6 percent increase).

Overall, every additional million dollars in restaurant sales generates 34 more jobs for the economy, which might make you feel better about eating out more often.

Now Hiring: Siemens Needs 400

Siemens USA is looking to fill more than 400 positions -- and most of them involve green technology. The jobs, in the corporation's Building Technologies division, were created to help cities reduce energy costs, lower CO2 emissions and save money.

Siemens developed these positions because 82 percent of Americans now live in cities, rather than out in the country. And as budgets tighten and that number grows, the need for cost-effective energy solutions is becoming increasingly important.

The corporation believes it can help cities lower energy costs by up to 50 percent and lighting costs by up to 80 percent through a comprehensive portfolio of: efficient building technologies, including intelligent building automation and lighting controls; energy management and smart-grid solutions; and renewable energy alternatives, from solar to biomass. They need hundreds of new employees to help put these solutions in place.

"Buildings are actually the world's biggest energy users, even ahead of transportation and industry, consuming one-third of the electricity in the U.S.," said Daryl Dulaney, president and CEO of Siemens Industry Inc. "Siemens is looking to hire 400 new employees to support sales, as well as the subsequent engineering and servicing of buildings targeted for retrofit or modernization to lower energy consumption, reduce CO2 emissions, and improve the bottom line for city budgets."

Openings in the Building Technologies division are based in 39 states across the U.S., and require skills and/or experience in building systems and energy efficiency, field service and sales, installation and project management, product marketing, and electrical and mechanical engineering.

Now Hiring: Schneider National Is Hiring a Fleet of Truckers

At least 300 truckers will be back on the road again. Schneider National, a $3.1 billion company that's one of the largest truckload carriers in North America, is hiring 300 professional truck drivers in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico for its growing Dedicated and Bulk (tanker) divisions.

There's a lot of energy behind this hiring burst: It's fueled by new business with leading energy companies in the oil industry. Specifically, drivers will use either dry hopper tankers to deliver products into, or liquid tankers hauling condensate from, the oil extraction areas. That means that most of these new drivers won't have to make those grueling, cross-country runs.

The salaries are not bad, either: Average earnings for these full-time, permanent positions will be $40,800 to $60,500 per year (depending on experience and the specific account). Among the other benefits are good work/life balance, with most positions allowing drivers to go home each day.

Schneider is also offering comprehensive benefits packages, and drivers will be hauling no-touch freight for just one customer, which yields predictability and familiarity with the business, the customer team, and the delivery locations and routes.

Specific areas in Texas that need drivers include Alice, Laredo, Victoria, Midland and San Antonio, as well as the Oklahoma regions of Elk City and El Reno. They're also looking for drivers in the Hobbs, N.M., area.

Now Hiring: California Jobs That Are Fresh & Easy

"Boutique" grocery stores like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods that feature unique and healthy food are becoming more popular these days, and they're creating a large number of jobs across the U.S. One of the latest entrants into that category is the Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market chain, an export from the U.K., and it's growing so fast that it's going on a hiring spree in California.

With 176 stores already established in California, Nevada and Arizona, there are three new stores getting ready to open in the Golden State, and there will be at least 25 employees hired for each, both full and part-time. That's in addition to the 300 people who were and are employed in the construction of each store, so Fresh & Easy has been responsible for creating almost 1,000 jobs in these areas over the past year.

Applications are currently being accepted for the two stores opening in Long Beach, and one in Hayward. With little or no experience, you'll start at $10 per hour, but you'll also be eligible for quarterly bonuses of up to 10 percent, a 401(k) with company match, a paid-time-off program, and life skills training.

One of the best perks of working at Fresh & Easy is that if you're on the company clock for 20 hours or more per week, you could be eligible for "affordable and comprehensive" health care benefits, that include vision, prescription drug, dental and medical coverage with Fresh & Easy paying at least 75 percent of the cost. Company reps also note that there's also plenty of opportunity for advancement. It's reported that more than 200 employees were promoted to management positions last year.

Now Hiring: JPMorgan Chase Expanding in Florida

You hear so much these days about hiring and firing in the financial sector: Wall Street is wasting away, banks are booming -- it's hard to know exactly which financial jobs are hot, and which are not. Well, we've got true, reliable, insider information on that subject, at least for those who live in Florida, especially in the Tampa Bay area. In August, JPMorgan Chase will be hiring as many as 200 new employees as it ramps up its presence in The Sunshine State.

Those 200 new jobs are part of the more than 600 openings statewide. To break the numbers down, about 30 of those new positions will involve auto loan collections. Then there are another 180 available positions in Chase's Tampa Bay area bank branches. The positions include managers, personal bankers and tellers.

Almost everyone in Florida is familiar with Chase's massive credit card network, but not so much with their personal banking services. Ever since the company bought Washington Mutual, however, and acquired more than 200 locations in Florida, JP Morgan Chase has been making an effort to expand its brand, giving the old Washington Mutual brand a rest, according to the Tampa Bay edition of the St. Petersburg Times.

The news source also reported that several months ago, JPMorgan Chase announced intentions to invest more than $100 million in new Florida branches, with 37 more branches opening throughout the state, each with at least a dozen employees. Specifically, there will be 12 branches in central-west Florida, in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Sarasota counties. There will also be 16 branches in southeast Florida, six branches in southwest Florida, and three branches in Central Florida.
